Thales Defense & Security, Inc. is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for our Clarksburg, Maryland office who is an experienced and skilled embedded systems developer able to perform as a key contributor to a variety of hardware and software centric development projects.

This position involves general systems engineering support for a variety of products, including state-of-the-art military communications systems utilizing software defined radio (SDR) technology, SATCOM terminals, helmet-mounted displays, and larger distributed software systems.  The candidate must be able to work closely with business development, external partners, customers, and technical staff to define and capture operational concepts, system requirements, system architectures, technical risks, trade studies, and development budgets and schedules.  The candidate will lead the elaboration of the system design and functional partitioning, and lead all system integration and test efforts.  Finally the candidate must work with the project manager to manage risks and ensure the project scope is delivered within budget and schedule.



To be considered for this exciting and challenging role, you must have:




  • BSEE or BSCS degree
  • US Citizenship.  The selected applicant will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • At least 8 years of experience with either system level design, software development, and/ or testing of portable, battery operated tactical type products (embedded systems)
  • Experience from a Systems level supporting successful proposal efforts; especially writing technical aspects for US DOD or foreign military or Federal procurement activities
  • Skilled in assisting customers in defining and selecting agreed upon technical solutions; might include requirements elicitation, decomposition, traceability and lifecycle management



  • Experience with portable, battery operated embedded systems design
  • Strength with both terrestrial and satellite communications links might include secure, state-of-the-art military communications systems operating in the 2 MHz to 2.5 GHz frequency range
  • Knowledge of enterprise software systems and networking concepts
  • Strong understanding of RF design, Digital design, Software design, Information Security
  • Keen interest and previous experience working in a laboratory environment with RF and Digital test equipment
  • Working with Software Defined Radios (SDRs) and with mobile ad-hoc networking waveforms
